Process of DOT Random Drug Testing for CDL Drivers

DOT random drug testing for CDL drivers is exactly as it sounds. The FMCSA and CDL drivers’ names are placed in a pool for random drug testing, and individuals are selected through a computer-generated process. Every employee within this testing pool has an equal chance of being chosen for DOT random drug testing. Once a FMCSA and CDL driver is selected, they must promptly undergo the test, minimizing the opportunity to eliminate any traces of illegal drugs from their system.

The specific minimum percentage of employees to be tested within the pool can vary from year to year, but it typically ranges from 25% to 50% for random drug testing. Random alcohol testing generally requires a minimum of 10% to 25% of employees to be tested.
